The Architect’s Newspaper Features OCAD’S Rosalie Sharpe Pavilion

Data-Driven Design

As our production of data continues to explode, it’s only natural that that output found its way into architectural design. A new patterned facade at the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion used mapping data to convey a complex web of Toronto’s public artwork, artistic communities, and density of living and working artists for the Ontario College of Art and Design University, the leading design and media program in Canada.

The result is a striking ocean of information, layered beyond measure, sitting at the active city corner of Dundas and McCaul streets where students, pedestrians, and streetcars frequently pass by. Local think tank and architectural design firm BORTOLOTTO transformed the school’s existing office building into 18,000 square feet of student work and exhibition space.

Designboom Highlights Bézier Curve House

BORTOLOTTO’s Bézier Curve House Exhibits Parametricism in Residential Toronto

The house began as the initiative of custom-home builder Farhad Kazmian, owner of Abond homes, to replace his family’s home in Toronto’s Lawrence Park neighborhood. he sought a family home that would also serve as a showpiece for his business — a house that would be the antithesis of the ‘boxy fishbowl.’ searching for a contemporary house with sloped roof, he discovered architect Tania Bortolotto and her eponymous studio’s spirited and sculptural style.

Celebrating 20 years in Toronto Architecture

20 Years of Impact

As BORTOLOTTO celebrate its’ 20th anniversary this summer, I find myself reflecting on our journey; and what a ride it has been! From day one, I believed that architecture has the power to uplift the human experience and I am proud that as a firm, we continue to prove that good design matters.

It seems timely that we will kick off a new decade and begin our next chapter in our new office located at 4 Clinton Place where BORTOLOTTO will continue to grow.

I feel proud of the accomplishments of the firm, a practice made up of dedicated, passionate and talented architects and professionals who have brought to life a shared commitment to serve our clients’ needs and aspirations.

This year alone we have reached the finish line with smiles on our faces and our hands held high on several projects after much blood, sweat and tears; the true measurement of passion! With the soon to be completed campus gateway Rosalie Sharp Pavilion at OCAD University; TD Bank’s flagship branch at Bay and Bloor Streets designed to enhance the public realm; and a soon to be constructed mental health facility, the Reach Out Centre for Kids, I have taken a step back and am proud of our accomplishments and the mature firm we have become.

I would like to thank you, our clients, colleagues, suppliers, contractors and friends for supporting our mission and allowing us to work everyday with the fuel to make a difference.

As we continue to grow our philosophy remains the same: to lift up the human experience and enhance happiness, health and productivity.

Toronto Home Shows Off Big Curves

Curves In Context

From the whimsical curves of its roofline to the “carved-out” design around a much-loved pool, Bézier Curve House is very much created for its residents.

The home’s owner, a custom homebuilder wanted to replace the family home in Toronto’s Lawrence Park with the “antithesis of the flat-roofed, boxy fishbowl.”

Inside, the 5,200-square-foot residence is laid out around the staircase which aligns with the roof’s curve. Named for one of its creators, the Bézier curve was devised in the late 1960s-’70s for use in automobile design.

Clock Tower Lofts is the 2022 Arido Award Recipient

Reviving the Clock Tower

We are excited to announce our project, Clock Tower Lofts is the recipient of a 2022 ARIDO Award in the LIVE TOGETHER category.

Formerly “Westside Lofts,” the residents of this 14-story condo located at 700 King Street West approached BORTOLOTTO to breathe new life into the building while respectfully acknowledging its storied history and helping to boost its transition to the future, increasing its value and desirability for residents, prospective tenants, and the community.  This involved a rebranding of the entire building, as well as a revitalization of the interior lobby, common areas, building exterior, and canopy.

“We are thrilled to see this project receive recognition from ARIDO, it is truly the type of work that continues to inspire us as a design team – taking historic elements and reintroducing them in a modern, sophisticated, and sustainable way,” said BORTOLOTTO President and Founder, Tania Bortolotto, “The design process began with the rebranding assignment, which took cues from the buildings existing historic lock located prominently on the exterior of the building and informs almost every detail of this revitalization concept, most notably, in one of my favorite features – the custom ceiling design.”
